I have a Dobermann who loves to play. Today, he played an April Fools’ day trick on me by ringing the doorbell which tells me he has to go out and go potty. But when we are outside, he gives me the look. That look as if he doesn’t know what I’m talking about. Notice the bottom toofies.
He plays this game with me on occasion, and I love him for thinking outside the doorbell-ringing box to tell me, “Hey! I need your attention.” And he generally gets it, so he keeps up the good work.
When you train humanely, dogs and puppies become fearless and adventurous about trying out behaviors to either get themselves a food reward or your attention. Teach them a trick, and they’re apt to come over to you at an opportune time to perform it in hopes it will get them a cookie. Reward the behaviors you like with kindness and a treat and your dog or puppy will keep up the good work.
