When watching dogs play chase, be mindful of the bouncy play style, which is what we’re looking for. When dogs play chase, this happy, puppy-like romping informs other dogs that “We are playing! It’s not the real thing.” If playing chase turns into flat style running where one dog is being chased hard by one or more dogs, then it’s time to call everyone back in for a cool down period, or to separate the chaser/s from the chased. Flat running is not play. It’s bullying or prey-driven behavior. So watch for bouncy and happy from all dogs in the game and preferably a change-up in chased and chaser, so dogs swap roles.
As is shown in this video, the youngster Doberman, Emilie, is working hard to get her 9-year-old Australian Shepherd friend, Dudley, to play with her. Emilie is so bouncy that her ears bounce in all their cuteness as she’s running around her well-worn racetrack. There is a lot of leaping, even at the end when Dudley leaps over our granny dog, Annie, who is 13 years old and just lying out for a fresh air bath.
When your dog or puppy comes to board and train through Love Wags A Tail humane dog training boot camp, they are introduced to our communicative and well-practiced dog instructors for regular play time. If they’re not interested in play, then we give them space to enjoy free yard time doing whatever they enjoy: sniiffing, chasing lizards or other varmints, relaxing in the shade or sun, playing ball. The LWAT dogs don’t interfere with dogs who don’t want to play. But if our board-and-train pups do like to play, then we grant them the opportunity to get active and social with some really awesome dogs!
