This is my puppy Velken, a Dobermann, at 145 days old. I taught him behaviors and rehearsed them everyday since I got him on Sunday, Sept 26, 2018. Most days I just took one meal and did a lesson in the morning with him. He loves to learn. And so he and I earned his Novice Trick Dog Title at a tad over 5 months old.
It’s not hard to teach your dog behaviors, but it does take dedication. One time a day. Is morning your best time? Or is it too busy? Then use the evening to take his meal and work on training your puppy to do some fun tricks. I like to start with down, and then roll over. When you teach a puppy to roll over, it’s a lot easier than to teach a full grown dog to roll over. But here’s the tip…you have to keep practicing it as your puppy grows. Or he will forget the mechanics.
Write down the tricks you teach your dog and practice them all at least once or every other week, so he keeps them in his repertoire. Have fun with your companion animal. We chose our dogs because something about them calls to us. So enjoy them. Our time on this planet is short. It goes too fast. So don’t wait. Take the time today to start a habit with your dog to enjoy time with each other and have fun. (Even during housetraining, which I know can be a drag! But stay the course and you’ll survive.)
Onward to the next challenge with Velken! I hope you do the same with your puppy. And if your want a quick start with behaviors, I can help with a 3-week board-and-train. Then you can take it from there after your puppy comes home with the basics installed. Contact me for availability. I only take 3 student board-and-trains at a time.
