What about behavior? Though behavior can be trained, no living being is 100% predictable. Think about the pro athlete who has off days oftentimes in front of thousands of fans; the dieter who vows to stick to the plan, but goes home to eat an entire gallon of ice cream after a stressful day; or simply reflect on the millions of new year’s resolutions made by well meaning people over the centuries to change their own behaviors, and the percentage that made them reality. And we’re human beings! We make conscious choices knowing fully well what the consequences are.
As for dog behavior, what they are capable of doing in the face of fluctuating distractions is up to the animal, but a good trainer will go over this with her clients and work through a training plan that includes escalating distractions. As for guarantees that your dog will behave appropriately under any circumstance as a result of training, the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers, in its Code of Ethics, states professional trainers “refrain from providing guarantees regarding the specific outcome of training and behavior work.”
