When housetraining dogs and puppies, keeping an eye on the puppy when he is let outside to do the job is important. Oftentimes, the puppy will find something more important to do than eliminate, as in pee or poop. Playing is an example!
This very windy Sunday, my own dog, Emilie, played with Neto, a 5-month-old yellow Labrador board-and-train puppy, here for boot camp. They had a great time. Notice at the moment they started playing, Emilie, who is well versed with going potty outside, took the time she needed to get the job done. Even though Neto was circling her, she finished.
Neto took four squats, which can be harder to see, but during the time playing, he couldn’t take the time to totally complete his much needed job of urinating! Because…puppy! And puppies would rather play than pee. That’s why you may find that your puppy goes outside, then comes back inside to pee. He could be too busy outside to do the business.
There are many other reasons a puppy doesn’t get the job done outside. The main thing is not to yell at a puppy when he eliminates in the house. He doesn’t understand because he isn’t fully housetrained, so it is not his fault for squating on the floor.
