My latest Dobermann is a board-and-train who needs multiple sessions a week in high-distraction environments. So I take him around town to train. He rides in the backseat like a pro, looking out the window and watching the scenery. But what he didn’t do with his bouncy, long-legged self prior to our drives around town was jump into the back seat of my F-150. I invited him up day after day, but it always ended with my having to hoist him into my truck. My guess is he’s around 80 long pounds. Lifting him was a workout.
After a week of wearing me down, I conceded that he wasn’t going to magically learn to do this task, as is the case with most every task dogs learn. No magic involved. Instead, a training session with motivational dog training food and a plan. I had both, so the next step was to do the deed. Train the dog to target his leap to the back seat of my truck. And I did so promptly as I was very much looking forward to the outcome. It would be very beneficial to Swayze, me, and his owner.
Here is the before and after of Swayze’s truck loading capabilities. As you’ll see, now loading Swayze into the truck for our on-location dog training sessions is a much easier task.
