Sometimes, what gets in the way of either housetraining your dog or your already housetrained dog eliminating outside is not an obstacle you can train for, such as a tropical storm, hurricane, or other rainy day event.
Unless you have a dog who absolutely loves the water, then when rainy days come along and your dog refuses to go out in the wet weather to go potty as usual, pull out your patience and usual habits and encourage your dog to eliminate outside.
This may mean donning your rain coat and galoshes and pulling out the umbrella. But whether or not you generally go outside with your dog, even in a fenced yard, than be sure, if you have a water-resistant dog and it is raining, you will need to stand out in the rain to encourage your dog to do his usual elimination business.
I have two types of dog in my family. One type is a water dog and the other is a water-resistant dog. Border Collies tend to do all right in the rain, but Dobermanns melt, so do their best to avoid getting wet. Case in point, tropical storm Eta moved across our homestead on November 9, 2020, and caused significant cheerleading work from me to get two Dobrmann to oblige and go poty while the storm hung around drenching us. It only took 4 hours, but we got there.
First thing out the door that morning, the only dog who tinkled was my Border Collie, so she was allowed freedom in the house. But I did not let either of my other dogs free time until they urinated outside. I did not want a flood in the house, there was enough of one outside. So both black-and-tans spent time in the crate. Not too much. They were willing to compromise when the hard rains turned into lighter showers.
Remember, if you’re housetraining a puppy or dog, inclement weather can be an even bigger obstacle to the work-in-progress pooch than to a dog who is already housetrained. But either way, keep to the Housetraining 123 plan you started with when training with Love Wags A Tail. It will get you through inclement weather as well as day-to-day.
You haven’t trained with us? Love Wags A Tail also offers a one-hour on-line Housetraining 123 webinar. You’ll learn how to housetrain your puppy or dog and you can fall back on the plan for bad weather days, too.
Remember to dry your dogs off when you come back inside! They will appreciate being dried off as much as you will appreciate dryer clothes.
